March Holiday Camp (Age 5-7)

Have some fun learning to code by creating a Platformer Game. Some famous platformer games are Super Mario, Sonic The Hedgehog and many others. At the end of the workshop, students will learn the art of game design and create a simple yet interactive game using their creativity and imagination.

Day 1:

In this session, students will be using Tynker, an educational programming platform aimed at teaching children how to make games and programs, to create a platform game.

Students will learn about game design and theory of a platformer game and customise their own game by brainstorming on their background, background music and characters they would like to use based on their preferred theme. Students can unleash their creativity when they create their own sounds, favorite characters, enemies, coin systems, platforms and backgrounds.

After that, students will focus on their main character. Through learning the concepts of gravity, random and loops, students will code to make their main character interact with the game environment such as the enemy, princess, coins, etc. Feedback of the game (i.e events/triggers to end the game and sound effects) and variables will also be introduced in this session.

Day 2:

In this session, students will be tasked to complete their platform game. They are encouraged to add in more obstacles and make their level more interesting. After editing their levels, they can then try out other students’ games as well as allow other students to play with their own game, gathering feedback and adjusting their game as such to make it more interactive and user-friendly.

This session is mostly a fun and easygoing class for the students as they make final touches and polish their game. To wrap it all up, students will present their game to their fellow classmates who will critic their game once more so that they can further improve with the ideas/feedback provided, allowing them to understand the importance of game testing in game development.
